Il metal è un mondo fantastico, l’unico dove si conciliano sangue e amore, forse perché noi metallari abbiamo una sensibilità molto forte, e ciò è testimoniato da questa intervista nella quale Juha Ravio, già nei Swallow The Sun e Trees Of Eternity, e fondatore degli Hallatar che hanno appena pubblicato lo splendido No Stars Upon The Bridge, ci parla del suo disco e della morte della sua amata Aleah Stanbridge, primo motore di tutto ciò.
ME Può la musica essere una maniera per lenire il dolore di una perdita?
La musica è una cosa che può causare o togliere il dolore. Dopotutto tutta la musica è il migliore antidolorifico esistente, è la cura per l’anima.
ME La musica metal è una forma d’arte?
Assolutamente. La musica metal è una delle più potenti forme artistiche al mondo. Non ci sono molte altre forme di arte che possano essere così tenebrose, oscure, meravigliose ed ispiranti contemporaneamente come il metal. Può generare emozioni profondissime sia nell’ascoltarlo che nel leggere i testi.
ME Come è nato il disco?
Ho scritto l’album degli Hallatar in una settimana, e non ho cambiato quasi nulla in seguito.
Ho trovato un sacco di testi e poesie inedite di Aleah (Aleah Stanbridge, la compagna mancata recentemente, nda), e ho scritto le canzoni intorno a questi componimenti. In seguito ho chiesto ai miei amici Tomi Joutsen e Gas Lipstick di suonare nel disco e lo abbiamo registrato.
ME La morte della tua amata come ha cambiato la tua visione del mondo?
Ha cambiato ben di più della mia personale visione del mondo. Non ho frequentato né parlato granché con le persone per un anno e mezzo, tutto ciò mi ha spinto a non affrontare le persone. Vivo nella foresta profonda con i miei gatti e i miei cavalli e trovo la mia pace da qui.
ME Quali sono le tue fonti di ispirazione?
La natura del nord e le quattro stagioni sono le cose che mi ispirano maggiormente, e lo hanno sempre fatto. Anche la musica pensante, come Type O Negative, Duran Duran, Iron Maiden, Rush e i Marillion.
ME Per quale motivo la Finlandia ama così visceralmente il metal?
In realtà non saprei. Forse una delle ragioni è che quando siamo bambini i nostri genitori ci suonano e cantano filastrocche molto oscure e macabre. Esse sono molto metal.

Metal is a fantastic world, the only one where blood and love are mixed, perhaps because we metallers have a very strong feeling, and this is evidenced by this interview, where Juha Ravio, already in Swallow The Sun and more, founder of Hallatar who just published the beautiful No Stars Upon The Bridge, tells us about his record and the death of his beloved Aleah Stanbridge, the first engine of all this.
ME Can music be a painkiller?
Music is the thing that can cause a lot of pain or it can heal the pain. But after all music is the best painkiller of them all, its the cure for the soul.
ME Metal music is a form of art?
Absolutely. Metal music can be one of the most powerful forms of art in this world. There is not many forms of art that can be such dark, painful, beautiful and uplifting at the same time than metal music. It can release deepest emotions by listening the music and reading the lyrics.
ME How is born the album?
I wrote the Hallatar album in one week and I didnt change anything on it afterwards. I found a lot of Aleah’s unreleased lyrics and poems and wrote the songs around them. Than I asked my friends Tomi Joutsen and Gas
Lipstick to play on the album and we recorded it together.
ME The death of your beloved how has changed your vision of the world?
It has changed much more the world inside me than my vision of the surrounding world. I have not seen people or talked much to anyone in a year and a half now, all of this has made me even more not wanting to face the people. I live in the deep woods with my cats and horses and find my peace from there.
ME What are your inspirations?
Nordic nature and the four seasons are the most inspiring things for me, always have been. Music wise it has always been Type O Negative, Duran Duran, Iron Maiden, Rush and Marillion.
ME Why Finland loves so much the metal music?
I really don’t know. But maybe one of the reason is that when we are children our parents play and sing us very dark and gloomy Finnish children bed time songs. They are very metal in many ways for sure.
