Orlando, Florida’s MEKA NISM’s sound is powerful, metallic, aggressive, melodic, and in your face. A band that fires on all cylinders and with the most charismatic front-woman “Meka”; the band has returned in 2018 with their new EP “The War Inside” released earlier this spring on May 10th to follow their three previous releases “Live From The Machine Shop” (Live CD) (2016), “The Shift” (EP) (2015) and “The Dance At The End of The World” (EP) (2013). The band has supported legends like Mastodon, Gojira, The Offspring, Limp Bizkit, Otep and In Flames over the years along with most recently Jonathan Davis (Korn) this past May.

The band’s new EP “The War Inside” stands for the ability to face your inner demons, conquer your internal battles, and to help realize that you can change your life for the better. That message is evident in their new music video for their infectious song “Trailblazer”, a heavy, fast tune that revolves around the idea of not letting regret or tragedy stop you from living your life to the fullest while you can. Your state of mind can imprison you or set you free.

The Sponges – Official Demo

Oggi va di moda la parola old school per descrivere una proposta che guarda al passato e l’hard rock suonato dai The Sponges è sicuramente da inserire nel filone classico, con le ispirazioni che seguono il passato da cover band dei gruppi citati, ai quali andrebbero aggiunti i primi UFO.

E’ un hard’n’heavy che guarda gli anni settanta/ottanta, pregno di ardore metallico, il sound offerto da questo gruppo proveniente dal trevigiano chiamato The Sponges.

Questi cinque brani compongono il demo di inediti con cui il giovane quartetto lascia definitivamente il mondo delle cover band (Led Zeppelin, Deep Purple e Judas Priest) per lasciare alla propria musica il compito di rappresentarli.

Warrior è una marcia hard rock rocciosa che perde qualcosina in impatto nel ritornello, mentre la seguente Run Or Burn risulta più metallica, un crescendo dai toni priestiani che si aggiudica la palma di miglior brano del demo.
La ballatona Love Is Gone spezza la tensione, prima che Song 4 torni a caricare di elettricità l’atmosfera e un riff potentissimo di scuola Zakk Wilde apra la conclusiva My Fucking Brain, il brano più “moderno” di questo primo lavoro targato The Sponges.
L’impatto non manca, i musicisti fanno del loro meglio per dare una loro personalità ai brani, quindi l’inizio è senz’altro positivo, e  noi attendiamo fiduciosi ulteriori sviluppi.

Ancient Veil – Rings of Earthly… Live

Una summa dal vivo che permette di ripercorrere lo splendido itinerario musicale di Eris Pluvia ed Ancient Veil. Una grande dimostrazione di vitalità e spessore del prog di casa nostra.

Nel 1991, tra i simboli della rinascita progressiva nel nostro paese, usciva Rings of Earthly Light dei liguri Eris Pluvia, stupenda opera di prog pastorale e bucolico, intriso di aromi canterburyani.

Oggi, gli Ancient Veil – che dagli Eris Pluvia sono derivati, con il vocalist e chitarrista Alessandro Serri, il sassofonista Edmondo Romano e la cantante Valeria Caucino – omaggiano quel luminoso passato, così storicamente importante, riproponendo altresì in versione live brani degli stessi Ancient Veil. Il CD in questione è così la registrazione del bellissimo concerto tenuto alla Claque di Genova l’11 di novembre del 2017: una stupenda alternanza di composizioni vecchie e nuove, un ponte gettato fra passato e presente, con il filo rosso rappresentato dall’amore per la musica di qualità a tener insieme i giorni di ieri e quelli di oggi, senza peraltro alcun compiacimento nostalgico o autoindulgente. La prestazione degli Ancient Veil è impeccabile e sentita (si nota la presenza di Fabio Zuffanti), mentre l’incisione è ottima. Da Rings of Earthly Light vengono riproposte la suite omonima e due brani, il resto è materiale Ancient Veil. E da questo imperdibile concerto emerge come le esperienze dell’uno e dell’altro gruppo si ricolleghino vicendevolmente senza soluzione di continuità. La creatività, del resto, non ha tempo.

Tannoiser – Alamut

Con una classica formazione a tre, i Tannoiser propongono un lavoro che spazia con buona fluidità tra le influenze dichiarate (Celtic Frost, Electric Wizard e primissimi Cathedral), mettendo a frutto l’esperienza live maturata in questi anni.

Alamut è un ep della durata di circa mezz’ora che rappresenta l’esordio in formato fisico per i Tannoiser, band bresciana dedita ad un’interessante forma di doom (al 2016 invece risale l’altro ep Mekkano, uscito solo in digitale).

Con una classica formazione a tre, i Tannoiser propongono un lavoro che spazia con buona fluidità tra le influenze dichiarate (Celtic Frost, Electric Wizard e primissimi Cathedral), mettendo a frutto l’esperienza live maturata in questi anni.
Baba Vanga apre al meglio il lavoro con un giro di basso killer, facendo presupporre un approccio catchy al genere che in realtà poi non si rivelerà tale: infatti, sin dalla seconda traccia Paradacsa, il sound si fa sempre più buio, rallentato e disturbato, accompagnato dal ringhio sgraziato ma efficace dell’addetto alle quattro corde Bruno Almici. Le distorsioni pronunciate di Necrophage donano al brano un’aura particolare, mentre con March of Wrecks i ritmi divengono ancor più rarefatti, e se The Void rilancia in parte l’andatura, la conclusiva Mekkano pianta i classici chiodi sulla bara con il suo doom mortifero ed essenziale.
Proprio quest’utimo aspetto a tratti può rivelarsi un limite, perché un sound leggermente più ricco (magari con l’apporto di una tastiera sullo sfondo) valorizzerebbe ancora di più le buone intuizioni dei Tannoiser: Alamut è in ogni caso un altro buonissimo tassello, piazzato al posto giusto allo scopo di edificare sonorità oscure capaci di intrecciarsi efficacemente con un contenuto lirico affascinante che, partendo dalla citazione della storica fortezza iraniana che dà il titolo all’album, trae spunto dal passato finendo per tratteggiare scenari foschi per l’umanità riguardo al suo futuro.

Wombbath – The Great Desolation

Nove brani compongono questa colonna sonora di morte violenta e trucida, tra riff che sono asce affilate che spaccano teste e staccano arti, con solos di lancinante sofferenza e un growl abissale che comanda le operazioni.

Death metal old school, oscuro, macabro e violentissimo, un abisso in musica di scuola svedese, puro come il sangue di vergini torturate in nome di una diabolica ferocia.

The Great Desolation segna il ritorno dei Wombbath, band estrema scandinava attiva dai primi anni novanta, in pieno sviluppo e successo del genere ma con soli tre album pubblicati più un buon numero di lavori minori, conseguenza di dieci anni di inattività.
The Great Desolation torna dunque sul mercato estremo dopo tre anni dal precedente Downfall Rising, addirittura ventidue anni dopo il debutto Internal Caustic Torments, licenziato dal gruppo nel lontano 1993.
Pochi ma buoni i lavori sulla lunga distanza di questo combo che in tutta onestà suona death metal vecchia scuola, di chiara ispirazione a primi Entombed e Dismember, senza compromessi, potente ed oscuro quanto basta per soddisfare i palati dei deathsters orfani degli storici Left Hand Path, Clandestine e Like An Everflowing Stream.
Niente di nuovo, anzi: l’odore di muffa è quello che usciva dai suoni più oscuri degli anni novanta, e l’album risulta così un macigno estremo che, se lascia qualcosa in personalità, non può che soddisfare gli amanti dello swedish death metal.

Embrace Death, Born Of Filth e Hail Of The Obscene, varia nelle sue intuizioni melodiche e brano top dell’opera sono i momenti migliori: l’impatto c’è, l’esperienza trentennale dei protagonisti pure.
